Peloton Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Peloton Bike, Bike+, Tread, and Tread+ display error codes when the system detects a fault in the resistance, mechanical, or software systems. Peloton error codes are a mix of hardware faults and software/connectivity issues — and the treatment is very different depending on which category your code falls into. We service Peloton equipment throughout Tampa Bay.

Before Anything Else: Soft Reset

For any Peloton error, start with a soft reset: hold the power button on the tablet for 5 seconds, then select "Power Off." Wait 60 seconds. Power back on. About 20% of Peloton error codes are resolved by a clean power cycle — especially software-related faults that don't indicate hardware damage.

Peloton Bike / Bike+ Error Codes

SC03 — Resistance Motor Not Responding

The resistance actuator motor is not responding to commands. This is the most common Peloton hardware error we diagnose. Symptoms: resistance level shows on screen but doesn't change; no change in pedal effort regardless of resistance setting. DIY check: power cycle; rotate the resistance knob slowly through its full range while watching for any change. Technician needed if SC03 persists — resistance actuator motor replacement typically required ($199–$299 parts and labor).

SC05 — Resistance Calibration Out of Range

The resistance system is out of calibration. Sometimes occurs after the bike has been moved or after a software update interrupts a calibration cycle. DIY fix: on Peloton Bike+, attempt a resistance calibration from Settings → Device Settings → Calibrate Resistance. Requires pedaling at a specific cadence while the system auto-calibrates. Technician needed if calibration fails repeatedly.

SC09 — Cadence Sensor Failure

The cadence sensor is not sending a signal to the controller board. The magnet on the flywheel may have shifted out of alignment, or the sensor itself may have failed. DIY check: power cycle; check whether cadence reading on the touchscreen shows any numbers while pedaling. Technician needed if cadence shows zero or "– –" while pedaling after power cycle.

ERR_08 / SC08 — Lower Board Communication

The touchscreen tablet has lost communication with the lower control board. Can be a software state issue (resolved by power cycle) or a hardware fault in the data cable or lower board. DIY fix: full power cycle. If the bike was recently moved, check that no cables underneath were disturbed. Technician needed if ERR_08 returns after two power cycles.

Brake Pad Alerts (Non-Error-Code)

Peloton Bike and Bike+ may display a brake pad wear notification. The friction brake pad that contacts the flywheel during coast-down wears over time and eventually degrades resistance performance and creates a scraping noise. Brake pad replacement is the most common Peloton repair — $160–$249 parts and labor.

Peloton Tread / Tread+ Error Codes

TREAD-E01 — Speed Sensor

No speed signal from the front roller. Same underlying issue as E1 on other treadmill brands. Power cycle first. See our treadmill error codes guide for context.

TREAD-E02 — Motor Overcurrent

Drive motor drawing too much current. Check belt condition — tension, lubrication, and wear. A dry or over-tightened belt is the most common cause. See our treadmill belt slipping guide.

TREAD-E04 — Incline Motor Fault

Incline motor not responding or out of range. Check for objects blocking the incline mechanism. Run incline calibration from Settings. See our incline not working guide.

When to Call a Technician

Call 727-512-5120 when: SC03 or SC09 persists after power cycle; brake pad scraping noise is present; resistance is completely absent or stuck at one level; touchscreen is blank or unresponsive after power cycle; or ERR_08 / TREAD-E02 return after two power cycles. We service Peloton Bike, Bike+, Tread, and Tread+ throughout Tampa Bay. Most Peloton repairs are completed in a single on-site visit — no haul-away required. Same-week scheduling in Tampa, Clearwater, and all surrounding areas.
