A clicking elliptical is one of the most common service complaints we receive — and one of the most reliably fixable. The click almost always follows your stride cadence, which is the key diagnostic clue. We handle elliptical repairs throughout Tampa Bay. Here's how to find the specific cause.
Each pedal foot plate attaches to the foot link via a pivot bolt and bushing. When the bolt loosens or the bushing wears, the pedal rocks slightly with each step and creates a distinct click. Check: grab each pedal and try to wobble it side to side with the machine off — any lateral play indicates a loose pivot bolt. Fix: locate the pivot bolt under or through the pedal foot plate and tighten firmly. Apply a small amount of blue Loctite thread locker if the bolt keeps backing out. This is often a DIY fix.
The stride axle bearings (at the center of the elliptical) and flywheel bearings (at the front) wear over time under repetitive stride load. When these bearings develop play, they produce a rhythmic clicking or popping sound synchronized with each stride revolution. You may also feel a slight vibration through the handlebars or pedals. Bearing replacement requires full or partial disassembly — a technician repair. Addressing it early prevents accelerated wear on the axle shaft itself.
On friction-resistance ellipticals, a worn brake pad can click as it unevenly contacts the flywheel. On magnetic resistance machines, a loose magnet assembly bracket can click during positioning. How to identify: the clicking changes or disappears when you change resistance levels. Brake pad replacement and magnetic actuator service are technician repairs.
The arm linkage pivots where handlebars connect to the frame and foot links have plastic bushings and pivot pins. When these dry out or wear, the arm rocks slightly at each direction change and produces a clicking sound. Fix: apply silicone-based lubricant to all visible pivot points on the arm linkage. If clicking persists after lubrication, the bushings are worn and need replacement.
