Heartbeat Fitness Repair was called to another BayCare Hospital Group location after staff reported a problem with a Chattanooga Intelect electrotherapy unit equipped with TENS/electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound capabilities.
The issue involved the electrical-stimulation side of the system.
The electrode pads were not operating consistently, and during treatment the unit could produce an unexpected or excessively sharp electrical sensation instead of the smooth, controlled stimulation expected from the therapy system.
Because the equipment is used directly in patient treatment, the unit was taken out of service until the problem could be properly diagnosed.
This was not a situation where continued use or trial-and-error replacement was appropriate. The complete stimulation circuit needed to be evaluated.

For electrical stimulation to be delivered properly, the entire path must function correctly. That includes the unit itself, output circuitry, lead wires, connectors, electrode pads, and the connection between the electrodes and the patient.
A fault anywhere along that path can cause irregular treatment output.
Our first priority was determining whether the issue was coming from the disposable electrodes, the lead wires, the output connections, or the Intelect unit itself.
We performed a systematic inspection of the electrotherapy system, including:
We also inspected the supplied lead wires and electrodes that had been used at the facility so the problem could be evaluated using the same components associated with the reported symptoms.
The fault was traced to the patient-electrode delivery system rather than the ultrasound portion of the device.
The electrode connection system was no longer providing a consistently reliable pathway for the stimulation signal.
Worn pads and compromised lead-wire connections can create changing electrical resistance during treatment. When contact becomes inconsistent, the stimulation may no longer feel smooth and evenly distributed.
Instead, a patient may experience a sudden, concentrated, or sharp sensation that can feel like an electrical shock.
That is an important warning sign and a reason to remove the equipment from patient use until the complete circuit has been inspected.
Once the problem area was identified, we serviced the electrical-stimulation delivery system and replaced the components that were no longer providing a dependable connection. The work included:
Because the unit delivers electrical stimulation directly to patients, the repair was not considered complete simply because the pads appeared to work again.

More importantly, the cause of the uncomfortable and inconsistent patient stimulation was identified and corrected before the equipment was returned to clinical use.

When an electrical-stimulation device begins behaving abnormally, simply turning the intensity down does not address the underlying problem. The equipment should be removed from service and properly evaluated.
