Your rowing machine resistance isn't responding — it feels too easy regardless of effort, or won't change when you adjust the damper or resistance level. The right diagnosis depends on the type of resistance system your rower uses — air, magnetic, water, or hydraulic.
Air resistance (Concept2, WaterRower Air): A flywheel inside a housing spins as you pull. The damper lever controls how much air enters the housing. True resistance is load-dependent — you create more by pulling harder.
Magnetic resistance (NordicTrack RW900, Hydrow, Echelon Row): A magnetic brake assembly positions magnets near the flywheel electronically. The console sends resistance commands to an actuator motor.
Water resistance (WaterRower, Ergatta): Paddles spin in a water tank. You add or remove water to change the baseline resistance level.
Hydraulic resistance (compact piston rowers): Pistons on the arms provide resistance. Adjustment is a dial on the piston itself.
On a Concept2 or similar air rower, "resistance not working" usually means the damper isn't changing the feel as expected, or the machine feels unusually easy regardless of effort. Common causes: a stuck or stiff damper lever (clean the pivot and check vent slots for debris); a clogged flywheel housing (dust and lint restricting airflow — Concept2 recommends vacuuming the housing every six months); or a worn or stretched chain/rope that reduces energy transfer to the flywheel. Concept2 chain replacement is recommended every 50 million meters.
On a connected magnetic rower, resistance problems are usually electronic. If commands produce no mechanical response, the most common cause is a failed resistance motor or actuator in the magnetic brake assembly. If resistance is stuck at one level, the actuator may be seized. On connected rowers, also check for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi dropout between the console and motor controller — power cycle and re-pair the device. A failed motor controller board will cause resistance that works intermittently or not at all, often with no error code.
On a WaterRower or Ergatta, low resistance almost always comes down to the water level in the tank. Use the fill tube to add water until resistance feels appropriate. If resistance still feels low after filling, check the paddles for cracks or debris around the axle. Algae buildup inside the tank can also affect performance — add a purification tablet every 6–12 months.
Hydraulic pistons lose resistance when they develop internal leaks or when the fluid degrades. If one arm feels noticeably lighter than the other, a piston has likely lost its seal. Hydraulic cylinder replacement is typically $149–$249 per side and is a professional repair.
