A clicking noise from your elliptical is your machine's way of telling you something is loose, worn, or dry. The sound might show up only at certain points in the stride cycle, get worse at higher resistance, or be constant throughout the workout. We handle elliptical repairs throughout Tampa Bay, and clicking and popping noises account for a large share of our service calls. The good news: most clicking ellipticals are fixable, often at a reasonable cost.
The most common cause. Footpads connect to pedal arms via pivot bolts that allow the pad to rock during stride. These bolts loosen over time from vibration. A loose pivot bolt creates a click at the point where the footpad changes angle under foot load. Check by wiggling each footpad sideways and front-to-back while holding the pedal arm still — any play indicates loose hardware. Fix by applying blue thread-locking compound and torquing to spec. If a plastic or rubber bushing at the pivot is worn, a tightened bolt alone won't fix it.
Many ellipticals have rear ramp rollers or guide wheels that the pedal arm rides along during the stride path. If the roller bearings wear out or the ramp becomes grooved, clicking or popping occurs as the roller moves over worn spots. Ramp roller replacement is common — rollers are typically inexpensive ($20–$60 per roller) but accessing them requires significant disassembly, making it a professional job on most models.
The stride axle runs through bearings on both sides of the main frame. When these bearings wear, they produce clicking, grinding, or rhythmic ticking with every revolution. The distinguishing feature: stride axle bearing noise is typically felt as a slight vibration in the handles and tends to be consistent regardless of which foot is bearing weight. It gets louder over time and may develop into grinding. Stride axle bearing replacement requires removing the pedal arms and extracting the axle from the frame — a professional job.
A worn flywheel bearing produces a rhythmic clicking or whirring that increases with speed. A drive belt with a damaged link or irregular wear pattern produces a periodic slap or click at regular intervals. If the noise correlates with speed rather than stride position — getting faster as you pedal faster — flywheel or drive system components are the likely cause.
Ellipticals have multiple pivot joints that require periodic lubrication. When these joints run dry, they click and squeak. This noise is typically intermittent, may disappear after the machine warms up, and affects multiple points in the stride. Apply white lithium grease to pivot pins, ramp rails, and wheel contact surfaces. Silicone spray is suitable for plastic-on-plastic contacts. A thorough lubrication service — part of our preventive maintenance visits — typically resolves dry-pivot clicking.
A minor click from a dry pivot or slightly loose bolt is typically safe for short-term use, but should be addressed within a few weeks. A click from a worn stride axle bearing, ramp roller, or flywheel bearing indicates structural wear that gets worse with continued use. When in doubt, stop using the machine until it's been inspected.
